Local 22’s Testing Program
In compliance with the Referral Rules and the need to foster professional workers, Local 22 has for many years maintained a rigorous testing program. The three levels of testing given by volunteer members of Local 22 all have two parts: a Practical (hands-on) section and a Written (multiple-choice) section. The three tests that Local 22 administers are the C, B, and A Tests. Members of the D List who meet the qualifications specified in the Referral Rules may take the C Test. The Union office will send notification to all D List members who appear to meet the appropriate conditions to take the C Test. If a member feels that she/he is qualified but did not receive notification, that person should notify the Union Office (202-269-0212). The basic qualification for a D List member to be eligible to take the C Tests is 700 hours of work “performing the Work of a Stagehand in the territorial jurisdiction of Local 22” (See Referral Rules). The C Test applicant will be required to show documentation of their work experience.
Most of the tests are given at one of the theatres in downtown Washington, DC. Tests usually start at 9am and may take most of the day to administer. Tests are treated as work calls. You will be given a ‘late’ if you fail to appear on time; all of the 25+ volunteers will have been at the testing location setting up since 8am and they have to break down and return all equipment after the test.
For the C Test you will be required to show up with all required tools and ID documentation. The Local 22 President will announce the results of the tests within two weeks of the test date. After completing your test on test day, please take time to fill out a Test Evaluation Form so that we may be able to improve the testing experience and its effectiveness.
Test takers may request a review of their test by contacting the Local 22 office. Should the test taker decide to dispute the outcome of the test, there is an Appeal Process that is in effect. That person should contact the Local 22 President, who will act as that person’s advocate.
Applicants wishing to take the A or B Tests should consult the Referral Rules for the requirements.
A new C Test Study Guide is available on this website. The A & B Test Study Guides are being revised and should be completed soon; (The older A Study Guide & B Study Guide are still available on this site).
Applicants interested in taking the ETCP Arena Rigging, Theatre Rigging, and Electrical Tests should contact Jim Utterback of the Local 22 Training Department.
Our aim is to make the A, B, & C Union tests benchmarks of the levels of professionalism that a Local 22 Stagehand should exhibit.
Thank You,
Test Committee
