"Growth And Power Of Independent Media" To Be
Focus Of Ithaca College
Symposium
ITHACA, NY - Journalists, experts and leading innovators will gather at
Ithaca College September 15-16 to discuss the growing independent media and
their impact on journalism, politics and society. Sponsored by the new Park
Center for Independent Media (PCIM), this inaugural symposium features
panels for two dozen invited participants as well as a free public
presentation by award-winning blogger Josh Marshall, founder of Talking
Points Memo.
"Independent media are booming today," said symposium organizer and founding
PCIM director Jeff Cohen, "because new technologies and crises in corporate
mainstream media are clearing a path for new voices and communities to be
heard. The symposium will focus on how to amplify the success of independent
outlets - whether big or small, local or international - in terms of
revenue, audience and technology."
Josh Marshall's lecture, "The Importance and Future of Independent Media,"
will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 16, at 7:30 p.m. in Emerson Suites,
Phillips Hall.
Marshall won this year's Polk Award in legal reporting for his relentless
coverage of the politically motivated firings of U.S. Attorneys, coverage
that led to Congressional hearings and the ultimate resignation of the
Attorney General. Beginning as a one-person operation, Marshall built his
Talking Points Memo blog into one of the most influential journalistic
destinations on the Internet.
Also participating in the symposium will be Robert Greenwald and James
Miller of Brave New Foundation, who will discuss Internet outreach and
fundraising for documentaries, and the future of TV/video on the web.
Greenwald is the director/producer of such documentaries as "Iraq for Sale:
The War Profiteers," "Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price" and "Outfoxed:
Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism." Miller, a 1985 Ithaca College graduate,
is executive director of the foundation, which promotes social issues
through video, Internet and grassroots involvement.
Other media institutions represented at the symposium include The Huffington
Post, J-Lab, Maynard Institute, Media Consortium, Real News Network and New
America Media (a nationwide association of over 700 ethnic media
organizations). Panels will cover such topics as "Independent Media
Successes," "Business/Revenue Models" and "New Initiatives, Collaborations
and Technologies."
