St. Louis Conference will address issues facing working women
in upcoming elections

MO State Representative Robin Wright-Jones, others to speak

Washington DC, September 5, One thing is certain about the 2008 Presidential Election women, as they have since 1980, will be a majority of the electorate that decides who next occupies the Oval Office.  Both the Democrats and the Republicans are well aware of this fact.

One party has a long history of supporting women’s rights, as do that party’s candidates for the top offices.  One party is working overtime to sway women into their court.

“The economy, healthcare, energy, equal pay for women, jobs with livable wages, the war in Iraq, reproductive choice, education, childcare and retirement security are concerns that are on the minds of working women,” Marsha Zakowski, National President of the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW) stated.

Being a woman and a mother in and of itself is not sufficient reason for a vote of support.  We need to compare the candidates records and positions when it comes to issues that working women care about.

Many of these subjects will be covered in CLUW’s GOTV Activity and Working Women Vote 2008 Conference which will focus on providing factual information to use to talk with other union women about which candidates are on the side of real women’s issues. Conference presenters include:  Representative Robin Wright-Jones, MO House of Representatives, District 63, Shannon Lynberg, National Director of the Younger Women’s Task Force, National Council of Women’s Organizations, Beth Barton, President of Missouri Women in Trades, Alison Gee, Vice President of Public Policy, Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region, Clara Faatz, Treasurer, St. Louis Area Jobs with Justice and Doris Buzzell, President, League of Women Voters of St. Louis.

The conference will be held on Saturday, September, 13th at the Crowne Plaza St. Louis, 200 4th St..  The conference is scheduled from 1:30-4:00 pm in the Upper and Middle Missouri Ballroom and will be preceded by a Labor Walk in the Community that begins at 8:30 am departing from the hotel lobby. Registration on Saturday will take place from 8-9 am and from 1- 1:30 pm in the Ballroom Foyer on the second floor of the hotel.  Registration is $20.

The Coalition of Labor Union Women is a national membership organization based in Washington, DC with chapters throughout the country.  Founded in 1974 it is the national women's organization within the labor movement which is leading the effort to empower women in the workplace, advance women in their unions, encourage political and legislative involvement, organize women workers into unions and promote policies that support women and working families.
