Battleground States Across the Country
Washington D.C. - The Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance (APALA) mobilized Asian Pacific Americans (APA) in battleground states across the country, including Nevada, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Oregon and Washington State.
"APALA members and community allies registered voters, knocked on doors, volunteered at phone bank operations and spoke to coworkers at worksites to mobilize Asian Pacific Americans," said Maria Somma, APALA National President. "The comprehensive nature of our political program encouraged participation at every experience level."
As one of the fastest growing communities in the country, APAs were poised to make a tremendous impact in this historic election. "Asian Pacific Americans helped determine the next President of the United States," said Gloria T. Caoile, APALA Political Director. "As one of the swing voters in battleground states across the country, Asian Pacific Americans can take great pride in this unprecedented election."
Often ignored by mainstream political parties and candidates, the responsibility of mobilizing APA voters falls upon the shoulders of organizations like APALA, along with national and local partners. APALA has embraced this role through the creation of Every Vote Counts, which includes voter education, registration, mobilization and election protection.
"An investment in the Asian Pacific American community represents a long-term vision that yields short-term benefits," said Amado Uno, Executive Director of APALA. "The results of this election prove that APA voters will turn out to vote, if they are engaged."
Founded in 1992, APALA is the first
and only national organization of Asian Pacific
American union members.
