(Las Vegas, NV) – The Nevada Chapter of the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance held a successful meeting to train and organize members of the Asian and Pacific Islander American (APIA) communities to participate in the upcoming Presidential caucuses on January 19.
“We are conducting mock caucuses in several neighborhoods with high concentrations of Asian and Pacific Islander Americans,” said Rozita Lee, President of the Nevada Chapter of APALA. “We want Asian and Pacific Islander Americans to join their neighbors and friends, attend the caucuses, discuss issues important to them, and share their points of view.”
APALA estimates that about 130,000 Asian Americans and 17,000 Pacific Islanders live in Clark county. Many reside in the neighborhoods of Spring Valley, Paradise, Sunrise Manor, Summerlin, Southwest Nevada, Las Vegas, Henderson, and Winchester. APALA Nevada chapter will notify voters in these communities and invite them to attend mock caucuses.
“We are pleased that our Nevada Chapter has taken on the challenge of elevating APIA voter participation in the political process,” said Gloria T. Caoile, Executive Director of APALA. “Our core non partisan programs are voter registration, voter education, voter protection, and voter mobilization. Participation in the caucus process – expressing presidential preference, discussing platform issues, running for delegate positions to the conventions –is another step towards political empowerment for our community.”
APALA, AFL-CIO, is the first and only national organization of Asian Pacific American union members.
