APALA Urges
U.S.
Senate to Pass Employee Free Choice
Act
(Washington,
D.C). The Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance
(APALA) urges the U.S. Senate to pass the
Employee Free Choice Act (S.
1041).
“Workers should be
able to join unions without harassment and
intimidation from employers,” said Maria
Somma, President of APALA. “We urge the U.S.
Senate to support working families. Employees
should be free to join unions and bargain for
better wages and
benefits.”
The
Employee Free Choice Act (H.R. 800, S.1041)
passed in the U.S. House of Representative and
now being deliberated in the U.S. Senate,
allows employees to form unions by signing
authorization cards. The bill also establishes
stronger penalties for violation of employee
rights; and, provides for mediation and
arbitration for first-contract
disputes.
“The best
opportunities for working people to get ahead
is to unite with other workers and bargain for
better wages and benefits”, said Gloria T.
Caoile, Executive Director of APALA. “Livable
wages, affordable health care, and retirement
security constitutes the new American Dream.
Passage of the Employee Free Choice Act will
allow workers to freely unite, pursue their
economic well-being, and achieve the American
dream.”
APALA is
proud to join the hundreds of progressive
organizations that support the passage of the
Employee Free Choice
Act.
APALA,
AFL-CIO, is the first and only national
organization of Asian Pacific American union
members.
