APALA Opposes Anti-Family Immigration Proposal

(Washington, D.C). The Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance (APALA) strongly opposes the White House plan to eliminate family preference in immigration laws. Under the proposal, U.S. citizens will be denied or limited in their rights to petition their brothers, sisters, children and parents.

"Our society is in many ways built on strong families," said Maria Somma, President of APALA. "We should be reducing the family backlogs, not making it harder for families to unite."

"Replacing family ties with employability standards sends us back to an era when immigration was used to bring contract laborers in to the country," said Gloria T. Caoile, Executive Director of APALA. "By eliminating family preference, we are shifting the rights of law abiding, tax paying U.S. citizens to bring family members here to corporations and businesses. Immigrants with family ties have the advantage of a supportive network. They set roots, build communities, and contribute to economic growth."

APALA supports immigration reforms that protect workers, unite families, and provides paths to citizenship.

APALA, AFL-CIO, is the first and only national organization of Asian Pacific American union members.
