Council
Governor Jennifer Granholm formed the Advisory Council on Asian and Pacific American Affairs to ensure Asian and Pacific Americans are equal participants in Michigan’s communities and economy on May 3, 2004. The Council recently held a Summit on Asian and Pacific Islander American issues on Dec. 7, 2005.
APALA Board
member Ying Gee was one of the 29 members
appointed by the Governor to serve four-year
terms after the initial appointments. The
Council will serve in an advisory capacity to
the Governor and alerting her to pertinent
issues within the Asian and Pacific American
community. It will also make
recommendations about programs and policies for
the betterment of Asian and Pacific Islanders
in Michigan and will help promote public
awareness of Asian and Pacific American culture
and
accomplishments.
2006 Affirmative Action Inititiative
The chapter is also
working with the Leadership Conference on Civil
Rights and National Asian Pacific American
Legal Consortium (NAPALC) on educating union
members and different ethnic community groups
on affirmative action as part of an effort to
defeat Ward Connerly plans to put his
anti-affirmative action initiative to a vote in
the November 2006 election in Michigan.
May 2005 APA Heritage Month
The
APALA Michigan Chapter co-sponsored the
annual Asian Pacific Heritage Month Celebration
at the State Capital in Lansing, Michigan,
along with State Representative Hoon-Yung
Hopgood (D-Taylot) and State Senator Jim Barcia
(D-Bay City) on May 3, 2005.
