Chapter Events
In November 2005, the DC Chapter co-sponsored a screening and discussion of "Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Prices" with the DC chapter of the National Asian Pacific American Women's Forum. About 20 members of the local Asian and Pacific Islander attended. APALA members Joey Hipolito, a researcher with UFCW, and Jane Norman from American Rights at Work discussed their organizations' work on Wal-Mart.
Over the summer, the APALA DC Chapter welcomed interns of the organizations that make up National Coalition of Asian Pacific Americans, a coalition of over 20 national Asian Pacific Islander American groups. To introduce interns to the Labor Movement and how it empowers workers, APALA interns Mark Villegas and Luigi Casas, Executive Director Juliet Huang, and Board member Joey Hipolito created a workshop consisting of a quiz highlighting APIA labor history and workers’ rights and a mock bargaining. The interns playing the role of the workers rallied for better wages and treatment to support their representatives at the bargaining table and show “management” their solidarity.
In May 2005, celebrated APA Heritage Month at the union headquarters of AFSCME and SEIU with informational displays in the buildings, guest speakers, and panels to educate about the contributions of APA labor movement pioneers and discuss current events.
