1199SEIU AND
CORNING HOSPITAL CONTRACT
RATIFIED
(Corning, NY) - An overwhelming
majority of members of 1199 SEIU
United
Healthcare Workers East ratified a
three-year agreement with Corning
Hospital.
The final ballot was cast at 7:00
PM Wednesday and the Union
announced the
ratification Thursday
afternoon.
Both parties are describing
the negotiations and contract as
an exercise in
professional, respectful and
effective dialogue.
"This
new contract was the result of hard work on
both sides of the table
and a
commitment to maintaining a positive,
productive and
professional
partnership," said James
Fanning, a Clinical Engineer and member
of the
union negotiating committee. "The
Union looks forward to continuing
its
relationship with the Hospital in this
spirit, with the understanding
that
we are all stakeholders in the success
of Corning Hospital."
The
new contract provides Hospital workers with
three percent annual raises
over
the next three years, as well as improvements
to Health Insurance and
Pension
benefits. The new contract also strengthens
language in areas to
allow for
higher quality patient care.
Beth
Fisher, a Registered Nurse and Union
Delegate called the agreement,
"good for the
workers and for the Hospital.
This contract will allow us to
continue
providing high quality care to the
community."
Chief negotiator for the
Union, Michael Farrell called the
agreement, "a
victory for the workers, for
the hospital and for the
community. We are
confident that together
the Hospital and 1199 SEIU can
continue to foster a
culture of mutual
respect and dignity with the overall
goal of delivering
the highest quality
health care to the Corning community."
Hospital President/COO Marilyn
Custer-Mitchell praised the efforts of
the
negotiating teams on both sides.
"Corning Hospital has achieved
important
improvements in the past several
years, and employee involvement
and
satisfaction have been key among the
things we've focused on. I'm
very
pleased that we were all able to reach
an agreement that assures
our
employees feel valued and respected,
that quality and service remain
number
one, and which also ensures the
hospital can still achieve the
operating
margins necessary to foster growth
and the construction of a new
hospital
in the future."
